Revision as of 18:54, 11 April 2014

I think the rules are a giant wall of over verbose text. Even rule 1, which is missing one of our most represented varieties of person, in that case I think that "abusive" or some such term is all that is required. Rules are important to the continued success of our space, Noisebridge have proven this by having none, Noisebridge is now a squatters den. I think the rules can be done in a more relaxed way that has a less condescending opinion of our members and without loosing any meaning. I propose the below as a more welcoming, more readable, 1:1 replacement for the current rules. I am aware that this is going to be a long drawn out thread and am still willing to do what it takes to make them into something people might actually read, maybe even quote. Bracken (talk) 21:18, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

re: rule 11, just FYI the local point of contact for emergency accommodation / housing / homelessness issues are the SCC run Street Homeless Prevention Team. Xanadu (talk) 00:21, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
I originally wrote these rules in January with consultation from our members on Google groups and they've served us well. Some of the rules can come across as patronizing and condescending but this is often the case with rules that are designed to cover us rather than to limit anything. I look upon them in the same way I look at a gun, “it’s better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it”. It is however true that some of our rules are duplicated, need rewriting or are indeed not rules but are general ethos and I welcome most of the proposed changes. Those rules that are not rules but general policy should not be so swiftly removed from our rules without making sure they are mentioned elsewhere somehow. -- Chris3DSmith (talk) 12:17, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
I also propose any rule changes be discussed and voted upon in our next general meeting. --Chris3DSmith (talk) 12:18, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
I agree that we should not remove anything that members should adhere to when removing duplicated rules, and ask that anyone feels free to edit my proposal below to include these in the remaining points. But I do not think that any "general ethos" should be included if it is not a rule. I do not see the rules as a gun that we should forget about until they are needed. I think they should be a concise document that people are actually willing to read, right now our members mostly do not, which I think is because they are too long and waffle about things that aren't rules.
